hi everyone looking for a hostel in sydney that will accept someone 40 as ive noticed alot have age restriction any help would be appreciated
All should be fine with that; that's one of the things I like best about YHA, that they attract a very diverse group of people visiting; lots of the regular backpackers, of course, but also families with children and people up into their 80s.
(But seriously, age restrictions in Australia??! I've never noticed those at all, and thought only a single backward part of Germany still had that...)
My husband and I are both in our forties, and last year we stayed at two in Orwell Street in the Kings Cross area. The first was Eva's Backpackers and the second was The Jolly Swagman. Both were fine, but the JS was probably just slightly better.
However, as we found with many of the hostels in Australia the rest of the guests tended to be younger, and they obviously have more issues with people not washing up etc, as the JS requires you to borrow collect the kitchen pans from reception with a deposit, which you get back when you bring back clean. Mind you, they never actually took a deposit from us, perhaps because they figured that being older we were more reliable, not sure.
And everyone was nice enough, it was just that, having spent time in hostels in South America and New Zealand, were have been used to a more mixed group, which feels better.
There are many types of "hostel," so there is no blanket rule.
Those operated by YHA Australia, also known as HI Australia, have no age restriction, as indicated on its Web site: "We welcome travellers of all ages although children under 17 must always be accompanied by a responsible adult over the age of 21."

I'm in my 60s; and I sometimes stay in hostels. I've been a life member and supporter of Hostelling International USA since the 1970s, when it was known as American Youth Hostels.
There are many types of accommodation available to travelers. Sometimes a "hostel" isn't the best, or least expensive, option. It pays to shop around.
well its my first trip n like the rest of us trying to do it as cheap as possible but still want people to mix with but was looking on a few the jolly swagmans was one and it said must be 18 to 35 hence this post
Did it say that on a booking website? I can't see anything on the Jolly Swagman's own site that refers to an age limit. Most other's staying there are younger, but that seems to be the case in most Aussie hostels, and there were quite a few people who were longer term stayers, working in Sydney.
We were there last September, when I was 44 and my husband 47. They look at your passports on check-in, so they could see our ages, and while we're not wrinkly, sadly we don't look ten years younger either!
