I'm rushing off right now, and will be busy tomorrow too, so don't have time for the long reply I'd like to write, but I did write something similar to what I might write here , so hopefully that link will help a bit.
I don't know if you'll make any true friends, but I do know that you generally won't be lonely, and will meet up and hang out with lots of fellow travellers. New Zealand is an absolutely amazing country, and you'll have a wonderful time. Enjoy!
