Hitchhiking.
When you hitchhike you may meet many good people who will even share meals and go out of their way to assist you in your travels. However, you only need to meet one bad person who will take advantage of young ladies all alone in remote areas and make your voyage your last voyage! Or a nightmare you may never ever forget!
In the US we do have long distance buses and trains at reasonable costs.
Maybe put safety first and use a long distance bus!
