Hi I'm 27 year old solo female traveler. I'm looking for one or more travel companions to backpack through Asia in mid to late 2017. I would like to go to Japan and Singapore, but I'm open to other places. No definite plans yet, so I'm pretty flexible on dates, locations, and length of trip.
Well you have plenty of time to plan things out. You will have to work up a budget to see how much you have for accommodation and day to day spending AFTER paying for flights.
"... I'm open to other places."
Backpacking.
Southeast Asia - Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Malaysia will be cheaper than Singapore and Japan. Singapore is now the most expensive country in Asia.
(Example.) From the US round trip to Bangkok will be cheaper than using one way flights to Asia. Do the math and compare one way vs round trip to a big city in Asia. From Thailand you can visit nearby countries with cheap local discount flights or even use bus or train. (I have used train travel from Thailand all the way to Singapore.) From Thailand I have flown to Hong Kong, Singapore, Yangon, Manila and other countries over the years.
Having a definite "go home departure date" does make it easier to plan out a daily budget. (Unless you are rich and budget is not a concern.)
Different times of the year means different prices for long distance flights from the US to Asia. Christmas - New Years season highest prices for flights from the US. Usually there is a price cycle for overseas travel. Some months cheaper than other times of the year. (Roughly when the kids get out of school (in the US ) for summer break the prices go up a little bit and then come back down September. Back up again Thanksgiving to late January. Price of oil, wars, plane crashes and terrorist attacks can affect prices too.
Take the time to read some of the many posts for travel to and around Asia. Do some Google searches too for travel to this part of the world. Verify visa requirements. (Depends on passport used, length of time, etc.)
Good luck.
