Both Nana area and Khao San Road are popular with budget travelers. My preference is the Nana area so I can use the Skytrain. But I am an old fart now!
For "best bars" you can do a search. Depends on what kind of nightlife you are interested in.
Many tourists travel on their own. Even older retirees do Thailand on their own. No big deal. If you are school age or not far from it maybe start with Khao San Road.
Thailand is very "tourist friendly" with all sorts of places to stay from basic economy to luxury hotels. Everything for every budget.
Three months is a long time. Different countries means different visa requirements. Read up on how to have money available. Not a good idea to carry 10,000 euros or dollars in cash with you if you intend to use dorms. Don't rely only on a single debit card.
