Phil222 has indicated that this thread is about Russia
Hi Phil,
I am looking into doing this at about the same time... haven't done any research lately but in my earlier research I decided to go from St. Petersburg to Bejing (Peking). The main place I'd like to stop off along the way is the Gobi desert in Mongolia.
I'll keep you posted on any more I find out closer to the date/costs etc.
Cheers,
Sam
I'm another planning to finally do the whole thing at some point. As a general idea, most people will stop in St. P and Moscow, and then go straight through to Irkutsk, and spend some time around Lake Baikal and Southern Siberia. Staying on so long gives you the real experience and also misses out a string of often large but ugly industrial and entirely forgetable cities. i've spent time in a few, and none of which would spring out as worth a stop on a normal itinerary. Having said that, most people aim to do it all in 2 weeks or so, so don't have time to linger. Then - depending on which of the routes you take - there are a few options, and Ulan Baator and Mongolia being the most well used stoping point.
Btw, Phil - 5 weeks will be significantly more expensive and awkward, because a standard tourist visa in Russia is only 28 days (absolutely no more). For a longer stay (or multiple entry), you need a business visa which are much more expensive and can be fiddly to get. I go there on business, have had visa's for about 8 years and have all the right accreditation etc to get it, and it's still taken me 7 weeks and counting to get a new business visa.
Most people suggest planning a 25 day max journey, which gives you 3 extra days in case of problems. Always leave a bit of a buffer, as things don't always work as well (or as quickly) as they should, and overstaying a Visa is really not advised...
Hi guys,
Thanks for all the info - it's really useful, esp. the visa advice. I've got a few ideas about where and what I want to do but I'd love to know how your own plans develop. Maybe if we coincide anywhere, we can hook up for a beer along the way? best
Phil
Hi guys,
I'm planning to do this trip as well but only next year, as I'm saving for it now. Do let me know your experiences and any advice from you will be greatly appreciated.

Hi
I live in Siberia in Krasnoyarsk city. I'm Russian, I teach English and French and also from time to time help foreign tourists as a guide. I can show you the best places in the city or in the nature reserve(it's near the city). It's possible to organize camping or visiting lakes and mountains. I also know the city Novosibirsk and Omsk.
If you're interested you can email me - snip -
Or please ask your questions right here.
I'll answer and show you the photos with great pleasure.

Hey everyone,
When I was in Madrid a few weeks ago I met some guys who work for this company called the Vodka Train. They basically do trans siberian/mongolian train trips budget style (their 21 day trip from St Petersburg to Bejing is 995 pound I believe but includes basically only the train and accomm.) and it straightaway reminded me of this thread. I talked to them a little and they could even do a Travellerspoint trip if we wanted to guarantee say 8-10 spots. Although that might be pushing it, the trips seem pretty good.

Sam
[ ps. if there are 5 that want to go together, let's organize! ]
I'm also thinking about doing this around July next year. Any more info would be appreciated. Cheers
