As you said it, its a necessary evil. I would suggest you go for it.
My experience of insurance companies is that they make it as difficult as possible for you make a claim and insert lots of sneaky clauses such as 'you have to make a claim within 28 days of the incident' in the hope that most people on long overseas trips will wait until they get back home before claiming and by then it will be too late to claim.
So basically if a country has reciprocal medical arrangements with Britain I don't get insurance, but if they don't have reciprocal medical arrangements, then I get insurance but just go for the basic medical cover and don't bother about cover for money, possessions, etc.
I'd get it..... for short term trips I don't have to think about it anymore these days as I am covered year round but for a longer trip like that you have to get a seperate insurance. From the UK the prices are quite doable these days...
Cheers,
Sam
It's a total waste of money and makes no sense whatsoever... until you're unlucky enough to be faced with an emergency, then it becomes the absolute best money you've ever spent.
Your call.

Terry
Travel insurance - you never need it until you need it!
We have a credit card which, if you book any part of your trip with it, however small, you get up to six weeks travel insurance. And we've had to use it recently since Air Asia rescheduled one of our planes for this coming July and we've had to change our connecting flights with other airlines and swap hotels as a result. This would have cost us around $600 but we only had to pay the $200 excess. The travel insurance also includes medical expenses and repatriation costs and all the rest too. Check with some of the credit card companies in Ireland and see what they offer - you might get an unexpected bargain.
ive always gone without and been lucky enough that nothings happened, but it just takes one incident to change all that....can anyone suggest good travel insurance co. that are cheap and offer full cover?
I've always had it and never used it but been glad I had it; £23 for a year's worldwide insurance, peanuts in the grand scheme of things. Though for a long trip I'd take out special cover (think the £23 one has a 30 day trip limit).
