Overland from London to Cape Town

klatham has indicated that this thread is about Sudan

Hi Kieron,

Have spent the last year or so planning a very similar trip which has now been postponed, so can probably help, but what are you actually looking for?

Borders and route availability changes on a literally weekly basis. Sudan (southern end) is the big problem at the moment, but in a month time could be completely fine and somewhere else may be the trouble.

Routes traditionally you have 3 options. The normal one via Morocco, West coast and then across to Kenya etc; Via Morocco, West coast and follow that down through Cameroon and Angola etc and via Turkey, the Middle East, Egypt and the Eastern side.

Eritrea itself (last i heard, but haven't checked for a bit) is fine, but getting in & out can be tricky due to Ethiopian border skirmishes etc

Hey there,

I came across this website recently: www.exfoleyation.co.uk. Could be useful.

Also, I am from a company that specialises in helping plan Southern Africa overland trips: www.drivesouthafrica.co.za. We mostly sell and equip Land Rovers and 4x4s for people looking to do their own round trips starting in South Africa. We offer a guaranteed buyback price on all the vehicles we sell.

We haven't had clients heading further north than Tanzania. If you need any assistance in Southern Africa, then visit our website and drop us a line.

Also, you can visit the website of our most recent clients heading up to Tanzania: www.getjealous.com/ohuggins.

Cheers,
Andre

hi there

i'm currently en-route from london to the cape, but on a bicycle so maybe you will overtake us on the way if you set off anytime soon!

might be useful for you to periodically check in to our website to see if we have made it through central africa! currently the options are chad-sudan (not looking good) or down through DRC, which is also not without risks!

drop me an email if you want advice on anything specific. in the meantime, buy the michelin maps that cover africa, glue them all together and stick them on your wall and start drawing your route! it'll make you realise just how far it is!!

all the best
anna

Hi there, I am returning to South Africa at the end of 2006 after many years in the UK. I am planning to drive my Land Rover down to Cape Town, so I am very glad to have stumbled across this forum. See some of you on route. Cheers. Andre

Hi everyone,

I too am considering taking an overland trip from Amsterdam, The Netherlands down to Cape Town in South Africa. Actually it was a sort of spur of the moment type decision and now that reality is setting in I was wondering if there were any seasoned travellers that could provide some helpful tips about what to think about and how to go about planning such an expedition. I'm also interested in how budgets were devised and if whether or not these were met or exceeded. Perhaps a lot to ask in a first post, however I think that these are the basics that I need to get to grips with.

Many thanks in advance.

Lyndon

I ran into these people while in Zambia, might be useful for you: http://www.kenningtontocapetown.com/
