How can i stop my ears hurting when we land on the plane??

Hey! Every time i fly my ears get sooooooooo sore and blocked ( I have had ear troubles for years)

I hate it so much. Sometimes it hurts so much for me, and sometimes nothing at all. I pretty much just chew gum, but cupping your hands over you ears works too. You look like an idiot doing it, but it seems to help.

Usually my ears are ok, but sometimes when I have a head cold, they can REALLY hurt. It kind of feels like your ear drums are about to explode!!! My theory is it has to do with all the extra mucus in my head, so I try to blow my nose as much as possible before landing / takeoff (which is when it is at its worst). Of course, chewing gum is an old trick to pop your ears, but I'm not so sure how much it helps with that kind of pain.

Any suggestions from people who actually know how to deal with this would be very welcome

Cheers, Peter

As others have said, basically you want to "pop" your ears so you can even out the pressure between inside your head and outside your head. According to the doctor's advice on the website listed above, try taking a decongestant before flying.

As a dive instructor I will give you the same advice I give my students before we head unerwater (same affect but more intense as descending in a plane)... Equalize your ears early and often - as soon as the announcement happens that the descent is started - equalize your ears... and continue to do it often, don't wait for the pain to start as then it's too late, the tube from your throat to your middle ear is already pinched off. And it's not like you can ask the pilot to ascen a bit like we can when diving!!!

Here's a great site that describes various methods of celaring your ears and the science behind it: http://faculty.washington.edu/ekay/MEbaro.html#Intro
It's really for divers but all methods would be suitable for flying as well - I would recommend practicing the Frenzel and then the Valsalva as they are both good proven methods...

Be careful taking decongestants on long flights as they may have worn off during the flight and now your ears may be even more plugged - time taking the decongestant so it's effective for the end of the flight.

Hope this helps,
Andrew

You have this thing ( check at your pharmacy ) that you can put in your ear, it has like 2 openings and its like one finger long and you only put a short part in your ear so you kinda look silly, but its not like an earplug, it's specially meant for people that have sore ears during flights, and it regulates the pressure or something, I don't really know, I just know that since my sister started using it she never had any ear issues during flights anymore

thanks for all your advice everyone, i think a nasal spray might be a good way to go to try and clear up the tubes as well as chewing and drinking and popping ears! I have over 20 flights on this trip so i need something to work!

stupid ears!

Go by boat

By boat may take just a little too long some places I know this sounds strange but I yawn to equalise the pressure - not when it hurts but as often as I can I try and yawn on purpose, also I suck sweets when the plane is taking off and landing and chew vapour release gum during the flight and that works for me

I once went overseas with the remnants of a cold. OW! Jeez... The only thing that helped a little was peppermint essential oil. I keep a bottle in my purse for headaches (or, well, against headaches), and I figured, why not? A little around the inside of the ear and it was a little better.
