backpackit has indicated that this thread is about Russia
SWIM, it's not that far. You can actually see Russia from Wales...
heh, ok maybe not, I grew up in Alaska. When I was there I spent a summer in Unalakleet, that's getting pretty close to Russia, and a lot of the Fisherman in the area used to get over into Siberia at times. I'd guess that you can find a boat from either Clarens or Nome that would be able to carry you. Even better that way since you want to see the end of the iditarod.. which is in Nome... That would work out too because that's one of the only times of year you can easily get transport from Nome to Anchorage...
Another idea is look at a company called Wallenius Wilhelmsman... www.2wglobal.com I know that they make at least an occasional run from Kamchatka to Alaska... or at least they are doing it for the folks over at www.drivearoundtheworld.com, but that will be in July.
Lastly are you sure the Bering straight freezes? Usually ocean water doesn't freeze.
I suppose I COULD swim...maybe build raft...
I THOUGHT it was frozen over, that's what I've read anyway.
thanks for the tips, I'll check into them.
If it's frozen, walk/skiddo/huskie sled/pogo stick over! - There's also a number of islands/islets on route you can use as required
Parts of the Bering do at least semi freeze over (and have seen documentaries of people crossing, or trying to cross entirely by land), sometimes properly, but i think they try and keep it open
hi, could any shramp(Chinese sounds simlar to the word 'hero') tell me----
Is travelling cross the strait a right way from China to Canada?
Maybe the beginning of next year i will do that.
Are visas to Russia and America needed?Smuggling?
I too am planning a journey across the straight, however I intend on simply walking across, using a siberean huskey as my ice tester. The goal of this is to really understand what the journey was like for my ancestors. Maybe you should attempt this.
Two guys from Vancouver (Canada) recenlty rowed their bowed gently down the stream across the Strait... you could try that.
Hi there,
are there any new news about crossing the Bering Strait?
I know of a few people planning to cross it by car or even on their way already.
I was planning to try it myself in 2010 and am currently working on preparing the car for a first scout test up to the Strait (Russian Side) in early 2009.
How are the chances?
What´s the best time of year to try?
How is the sea up there?
Cheers,
Robert
I am not too sure how many of these posts are said with tongue in cheek, or maybe a little more research is needed. So a search for Karl Bushby, he is genuinely walking around the world. Been going 7 years now. He crosses the strait. You might want to have a look at his site and or book to get an idea at how easy/hard you think it is
Hi, I am thinking of crossing Bering Strait over ice on foot. Would love to hear from all interested, all comments are welcome!
