Going to the Keys...cool. I was there just shy of two years ago and it was a blast. Of course, I was with a great bunch of people. I don't know much about the drive there, but I know that if you go, you need to check out the roof of the Whistle Bar on Duvall street. It'll give you a few stories to tell your friends when you get home...trust me dude.
I would definetly drive through the Everglades/ Big Cypress National Preserve to get to the Keys... might be a shade longer drive, but the scenery is beautiful, and you'll definetly have the opportunity to see some gators & tons of birds...
I have family from St. Louis and they drive down all the time to visit me in the Keys. It is quite a bit of a drive, about 2 days worth. -snip-
Well it looks like you have two options, depending on what you're looking for: you can either head directly south and hit up New Orleans (awesome city though you'll have to look into parking) then go directly east along the coast stopping in Pensacola and other nice coastal towns; OR you can head over and down and go through Georgia - Athens, GA is a really great young town, stuff to do, live music, etc or St. Simon's Island in SE Georgia is a really fun beach community worth a visit if you're in the area!
Either way you can't go wrong - have fun!
