Bangkok May 4-5, 2013

Hey all!
Me and my cousin are flying into Bangkok and spending 2 nights there (may 4-5) anyone else going to be in bangkok around this time?
Any suggestions on what to do?

Probably a half million tourists will be in Thailand during this time period.

You will need accommodation. You will need information on how to get from airport (2 airports by the way) to your hotel. That is just some of the basics.

If you need a hotel recommendation you should also include how much you want to spend on a room per night too. Hint - young tourists often choose Khao San Road area to be with other young tourists and have access so some cheaper hotels. Slightly older you may seek out hotels in the Sukhumvit, Nana area, so you can walk to nightlife, malls, street vendors and be able to use the city rail service. (Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi Airport connects to subway and to the Skytrain.)

Change your currency over to Thai baht in Thailand for the better rate. No problem changing most major currencies at the airport 24 hours a day. If you intend to use a debit or credit card tell your bank that you will be in Thailand before you leave home. (Your ATM withdrawal may be denied when the bank thinks withdrawals are fraudulent.) Travelers checks also work in Thailand too. Most of the money changing is done by major banks not some shady back room shop.

Any Google check will give you the typical "things to see and do" type questions and also "how to get from Bangkok to various cities." But where you choose to go depends on how long you are in Thailand, how much money you have available and even your age and gender. Retirees often like things different than school age tourists. Like Hua Hin for retirees and family groups and Koh Phangan for kids who like dope and to get wasted looking at the moon. Phuket and Chiang Mai are popular with women. People on tight budgets who want a lot of cheap hotels and nightlife without much travel may choose Pattaya, about 2 hours from Bangkok on a cheap bus.

How long you can stay in Thailand depends on what country you are from. Different passports different rules. If coming from N. America try to stay for at least 2 weeks because the plane tickets are not cheap! Expect hot weather.

If you are young don't do dope! Penalties are severe! Don't get drunk and insult the King of Thailand or piss off local police. Getting arrested in Thailand is nothing like getting arrested in a Western country. Be aware of scams. Google up "scams in Thailand" for more info. Usually if something sounds too good to be true it isn't. Gems, gold, tuk-tuks, palace closed are some of the scams. Buses booked from Khao San Road travel agencies also figure in scams involving breakdowns, stuff stolen from stored bags, hold ups. Get a bus from a real bus station!

Know how much per day you can afford for your time in Thailand. Check your visa requirements. Round trip tickets are cheaper than buying 2 one way flights. Buy or borrow a travel guide on Thailand and read up on what to do and what to see.

Million thing to do in bkk. I will be in bkk for sure. ^^
