advice on budget

Hey,
My friends and I will be backpacking sa and ca. We are planning on doing chile for a short while (2 weeks max) then Bolivia, Peru and Colombia. Before flying into Panama and making our way through the cheaper CA countries to mexico where we fly home. We are plannin on.spending about three - four months does anyone who has done a similar trip have any budget advice? I have been told 1000GBP per month or 1000$US per month.

Hey!

Did the reversed trip in the fall 2011... I was able to get by for 30$ a day on average (without the cost of flight tickets and the diving I did in Honduras)

But don't linger in neither Panama nor Costa Rica.. Those countries are much more expensive than the rest and you can do and see pretty much the same stuff elsewhere...

What will eat most of you're budget will be beers (party hostels can be devastating to a backpacker's budget) and the tours offered by hostels (short one-day trips in El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua is usually good value...

So watch how hard you party

Enjoy

Cheers

Hey,
Thanks for replying and for the advice!
I will try not to party too hard

Also just to ask.. how long did your budget of 30$ a day last for?

I was down there for 3½ months...

It wasn't really the budget that stopped me, had to return to Denmark for semester start...

Cheers

Ow, hostels in Latin America are not that good. You just can't imagine them as Europe hostels, they're horrible and the people that stay there are horrible. They're more like pensions, where locals live for little money. The only good place for hostals is Bogotá. In the old Bogotá (candelaria) you can find clean places.
For the rest of them I'll recommend to rent a vacational apartment, I usually do this when traveling to Venezuela o CHile, and if you're a group it ends up being cheaper than a hotel and sometimes even a hostal. I usually use -snip- to do searches on cheap apartments. Other option is to go trought classifieds online.
I hope it helps!

A.
