I'm thinking of a long weekend in Zadar and wondered if anyone has been and could offer some tips on things to do, areas/hostels to stay in etc or any other info. I'd like to do a day trip to Plitvice Lakes - is this best done independently or as an organised tour?

I stayed there just for a night before my flight back home and rented an apartment just across the water from the old town. There aren't that many places in the old town itself and the one that caught my eye had bad reviews.
Plitvice Lakes can be visited independently, but there are not that many buses a day and it takes quite a few hours. I took a bus from the lakes to Split, which was like 5 or 6 hours and travelled via Zadar, which was 3-4 hours, so a daytrip will be a long daytrip. Staying a night in a guesthouse is great (if you like I can give you an adress of one which was really perfect).
By the way, Zadar itself is a nice for a day but not more I found personally. Maybe if you are into museums, it might be different though.

Thanks Michael. I'm not massively into museums but I am fascinated by the Balkans war so I'd be interested in anything about that. It sounds like it has a nice historical centre but do you think perhaps it's not worth going out of my way for a weekend there?
It depends on how long you want to go.
If you can find a good deal with Ryanair or so, it might be ok to fly in on Friday and out of Zadar on Sunday if only visiting Zadar. But you might do a daytrip to for example Trogir, which is about 1.5 hours along the coast and it's also a nice ride and regular connections.
Or you might go for like 5 nights, and include a 1 night stay at Plitvice.
Maybe Split and its surroundings are better for a weekend trip? Easyjet flies there if I am correct.
I'm thinking of combining Split with Dubrovnik and Mostar on another trip at some point. Thanks, I'll read about Trogir as I hadn't thought of going there.
I havent visited Zadar, but,
Plitvice is great and well worth the trip, as Micheal said its a bit of a trek, i done it independantly whilest travelling between Zagreb and Split, i walked around all but 1 lake, it took around 5 hours i think.
I would also defo recommend Dubrovnik and Mostar, Trogir is very pretty and best visited from split(around 50 minds by public bus).

You should definitely visit Zadar to see and hear "Morske orgulje". Sea Organ is situated near the new cruiser port, as part of the waterfront.
