Hi everyone, I will be heading to Athens in July and then to Santorini. I was wondering how many days to allocate to Athens and Santorini (Kamari) as i will be moving on to Italy afterwards.
For coming up with the Athens airport to the center of Athens is required to choose one of several modes of transportation. Options offered transfers by taxi, subway and bus. The least expensive option is the bus transportation of which is best to take the X93 line that connects you directly to the main bus station in the center of Athens. Fareed bus is € 3.60. Slightly more expensive is the transportation meter, and the cost of transportation is 6 € per person, but the price is reduced depending on the number of people, so for two people costs € 10, while the three persons is 15 €. Taxi transfer price is around 35 €.
Thanks, that was helpful. However, how about Athens to Santorini/Kamari? I heard there are boats/plane but i suppose that boats will be cheaper although a longer time.
I had been in Santorini some years before and it was quite cheap to reach Santorini by boat. You have to take the Fast Ferries (boat) and is better to book it online. It is going to be cheaper. I think I had paid round 80euro both ways.
Athens is a nice city but unbearable in the summer. The temperature can reach 40 degrees sometimes and you keep continuously sweating during the day and sometimes and at night. I would choose to stay no more than 2 days in Athens and just see the most important sightseeing as the Acropolis, the Historical centre (Plaka) and the Museum of Acropolis. You need one day for that as they are all in the same region. Other nice places that I have been in Athens are the Mikrolimano in Piraeus, the Park in Flisvos and Alimos marina. You can choose 2 of this places for your second day.
Then for Santorini I would recommend you to see some parts of the island and not stay only in one place. Definitely you have to visit the centre of the island Thira, where is all the life of the island, specially the nightlife. Kamari is nice as well. You can visit Perisa, Imerovigli, Megaloxwri. Generally it is not a big island, so it is easy to see many places in a few days.

Athens(Piraeus)- Santorini is an 8 hours ferry ride on the cheaper slow Blue Star ferry, costing around 45 euro one way or 4-6 hours on the fast Hellenic Seaways or occasionally the HighSpeed ferries~60 euro nowadays I think... A flight might or might not be a better option time and cost wise.Flights last 30 minutes and I strongly suggest to look on Olympic and Aegean Air websites. Sometimes super-saver tickets come up, even lower than ferry tickets, but they go fast!
Personally I don't like Kamari, but you have your reasons to stay there(diving),so be it... Maybe consider to visit Ancient Thira, not that much impressive as a site, but nice views...you could even climb up the rock and down to Perissa... If you are into hiking in general check this: http://www.cycladen.be/SantoriniEng.htm While on Santorini I would definitely make a point to visit ancient Akrotiri excavation, some people find near by "Red Beach" a must see, personally I don't rate it much... Fira has 2-3 small but interesting museums and you mention "volcano" so I guess you are familiar with boat tours in the caldera etc (Kamari Tours is one of the larger t.a.s on the island, so you can book or organize nearly everything there anyway)

Acropolis site ticket allows entrance to 5 additional sites, and on my opinion Acropolis Museum and National Archeological Museum are a must too.Many people skip NAM on their rushed visit, but its collections rate among top 10 of the world on its kind. Anyway, it is stupid been in Athens and Santorini and not seen the original Akrotiri wall paintings (Nomikos conference center in Fira features copies,while most original paintings are hosted in NAM!). It is nice trying to hike up Lycabettus or Philopappos hills for aerial views of Athens and/or walk around Anafiotika area for an "island" feel... Plenty to keep you busy for a couple of days in Athens and I mentioned only very little of what is there to see and do..........

Would 4 days for Athens be enough? Also i would like to know if i have to book my backpackers inn in advance and are the lodging rates cheap there?

I could stay in other towns as the diving centre will bus us to and fro. Where would you recommend as the town to be in? I heard that you could walk from kamari to Fira. I'm thinking more of spending the day at the beach, eating, drinking beer and enjoying the view, hiking.
Haha I have no idea about the boat tours! I just saw the normal sights on youtube. My trip's only in july so i'm just taking time to plan now
