For those countries I think the risk is low or non-existent, unless you are visiting certain areas, for example the Thai-Myanmar border. I took doxycycline for some of my time in the region (it's much cheaper than malarone) but most travellers I met weren't taking malaria tablets and I wouldn't bother if I went again. Your main worry in terms of mosquito bites is probably dengue fever which is widespread in SE Asia, so you need to make sure that you use a good, deet-based insect repellent while you're there.

An alternative is to figure out which tablets (and what's in them) that your local doctor recommends... And then buy something cheap and similar at your destination...
That is almost always a cheaper and good option....

Thanks for the advice, I think I'm going to go with the DEET repellent and mosquito net at night.
In Bangkok you can pick up Doxycycline. Doxy is used as a malaria preventative. Check with your doctor to see if this is a problem for you. In Thailand you can buy this in Thai pharmacies from around 4 baht per capsule to 10 baht per capsule depending on where made. Check data sheet that comes with this medicine and also check the expiration dates too. I think this is better than nothing at all! Ten baht per day is pretty cheap for a malaria preventative!
With windows shut in hotels and the A/C on I don't see too many mosquitoes even in cheap hotels. Maybe search out the bathroom and hunt down any strays before you sleep. Deet works for some people. But there are tourists who are bug magnets and always get bit when their lovers-husbands sharing the same hotel, etc. never get bit! If you are a bug magnet maybe you will need long sleeves and pants too - plus the Deet!

I took doxy on my first trip and didn't like it much. I've been back a few times since and do not bother with any drugs. I take brewers yeast which is a source of vitamin B and turns mosquitos off the smell of you. I also wear long sleeve shirts and apply repellant in the danger areas. Most of SE Asia is pretty safe though.

The side effects of malarone are generally thought to be less than all the other malaria tablets. It's very well tolerated by most people and side effects are uncommon.
Mefloquine (Lariam) has a reputuation for bad side effects.

I'm travelling to South America and I was thinking the same.
I've already spent £180 on vaccinations and Malaria tablets are really expensive especially as you have to take them everyday in infected areas + days after. I was going to opt for the cheaper ones but i think I might just go with the Brewers Yeast idea and a good 50% deet repellant.
