How much does travel cost?? :)

Hi There,

Hello!
Most experienced travelers on Western Europe agree that nowadays 50-60 euro/day/person is an absolute minimum allowing hostel stays, cooking your own meals, limited traveling around and only a site admission or a couple of beers every now and then. Maybe slightly, only slighlty smaller budget for specific countries on east Europe required. Of course a lot depends on what you plan to do and see and how often and where specificaly, but I would try to make this at least 80 euro/day/person in order to have some flexibility to have a seat down meal every now and then, to be able to take a side trip here and there or join some sort of activity and of course to pay admission and see at least some of the museums/sites/sights that might interest you.

The more time you spend in a specific place, the more you save because a) You may get better rates on accomodation for example staying in an appartment or even small guesthouse/B&B b) You do not spend on transdit costs eg air fares, trans, buses etc c) You get to know a place so you know where to shop, eat, drink on the cheap and where locals go d) You bond with fellow travelers and locals and you get info and tips on what to do and where to go to save money and often people you socialise with will buy you a couple of drinks or restaurant/bar/shop keepers will offer free items or better rates when you are a frequent visitor. So slow travel will help making your budget lasting longer.

I think many people have this somehow faulse idea that they'll arrive in Europe and will get by by a bar or hostel job or whatever. With unemployment levels and everything nowadays those works are harder to find that many people think, and are very very poorly paid anyway. Not to mention complications to work legaly if you are not coming from the country in question. I would try to save enough money to go and enjoy rather than counting on a work possition.

I cannot fault post #2, all I could do is repeat or reinforce.

Not what you asked, but do you understand the Schengen agreement and how it will impact on 'travelling around Europe/UK for about a year'? Whichever of more than forty countries you intend with the use of 'Europe'.

"... I think many people have this somehow false idea that they'll arrive in Europe and will get by by a bar or hostel job or whatever. With unemployment levels and everything nowadays those works are harder to find that many people think, and are very very poorly paid anyway..."

Bullseye.

Cheers,
Terry
