From Chiang Rai, there is a Mekhong ferry service cross to Lao and then to Luang Nam Tha. But the road in laos is so bad.
Another way is there is bus service running to Luang Phrabang from Chiang Rai, prepare usd 30 and 2 passport photo for VOA. Bus running everyday on 13.00 pm at Chiang Rai bus station.
From Luang Phrabang you can go to Vientiane whether Hanoi, bus service asking from GH or hotel you stay.
In Hanoi, heading to southern part of Vietnam to Hochiminh City. There is bus running service from HCMC to Phnom Penh and then to Siemriep for Angkor Wat (must visit).
From Siemriep, there are buses running to Thailand Bangkok or Pattaya.
