im planning to go to australia around the end of janaury and have been told to go through a company such as bunac.
In my experience (having done everything myself), it's totally not worth going through such a company. All the things these companies do, you can do yourself, mostly for free. (And the "added value" activities you don't need, and wouldn't have done if it wasn't for the company.) If there's a specific task you don't know how to do, ask here on the forum and we'd be very willing to give you pointers (which forms to fill in for a TFN, what to bring when opening a bank account, etc).
These companies rely on people feeling helpless and in need of hand-holding, but when you're going to a strange country for a year, I think it makes much more sense to start off by taking care of the easy things yourself, to make sure you start the trip with a boost of self-confidence, rather than feeling you always need to rely on someone else.
I totally agree with Sander - no need at all to go through Bunac or any other company. Australia is totally geared up towards working holiday makers and backpackers, so it's really easy to do it alone. I'm not sure why anyone would tell you to use a company to be honest.
You'll have no problems meeting people in hostels once you get there.
was gonna say the same thjing got my visa my self was granted with a day and i have all the forms that need to be filled out waiting in my draft folder in my email and im going november time so a lil sooner than yourself and flying into brisbane but can imagine meeting people will be quite easy but we can only wait and see
