Hi,
One of your biggest expenses will be the cost of travel as there are great distances involved. You need to look at some prices.
Japan is quite expensive to stay in, with South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong fairly expensive.
Around $2,000 a month for everything is not really a lot. If it was me, I would do it backwards so as to the last two, see if you have the money to do them. You don't really want to blow a lot of your budget in Japan and then worry about the rest of the trip.
You will need visas in a number of these places and if you cannot get them on arrival, some like the Chinese are time sensitive so you can get them at embassies on the way to those countries. Take along a number of passport sized photos and copies of the information page of your passports.
Accommodation is not really that much of a problem, even in the high season (Dec to Apr) there are rooms, so keep a very elastic schedule and take it as it comes. Accommodation can be booked online from internet cafes beforehand, using sites like this (Accommodation link at the top of the page).
Travelfish is quite good for general information on these places.
Consider travel insurance.
How are you going to take the money? Prepaid credit cards? Do be very careful of theft. Nowadays, where there are tourists, there are pick pockets and thieves. Thailand particularly.
Don't pack too much. You can buy things as you travel since these places are well travelled routes.
I agree with 'cyberia' on two main points. Pack light. You do not want to haul heavy bags around for a year. Here is a demo on that might help. I would also consider to deter theft. Low cost rooms are simply not secure. Worth thinking about IMO.
Cyberia points out that you have your high cost countries first. I agree that you should consider reversing your itinerary. Indonesia, Laos, Burma, VN, Thailand, Cambodia are low cost countries. Many BPers spend $1K/month or less in these countries. I don't think you will spend more than a week in SIN or HKG. Malaysia is a bit more, but not a budget breaker. Tibet, China, S. Korea & Japan are the countries that will eat up your budget. If you hit the lost cost countries first, you will have a good idea of how long you can stay in the last 4 on your list.
Make use of overnight trains or buses when possible. Saves 1 night accomm. and you arrive early am. Best time to find a place to stay. Best i is here. Good luck with your planning
