Why is this being posted on the North American thread?

Good question. But, some members click on what they think is the correct forum and actually click the wrong one then post. This thread has now been moved to Asia.

(I've moved threads to the wrong forums and have had to have Admin move them to the correct one because I don't moderate the 'wrong' forum.) Mistakes happen. Yup,in the holiday spirit.)

Hi Marylou
I am in Shan State at the moment . You will not be allowed to travel to much of northern Myanmar right now because of ethnic / political violence . That includes Myitkyina , Bhamo , Sittwe and Mrauk - U . My suggestions are that as you are going to Mandalay anyway why not check out Shan State ? If you like walking Kyaukme , Hsipaw , Pindaya and Kalaw are nice . Have a good one .
Ian

Thanks Ian

Wanted to head for Myitkyina for the Maona (?) Festival next week then head back down south via river boat but suppose that is not happening now? Will be in Yangon on Monday so will check everything out then. Will be in Myanmar for 28 days and the places you mention are on my list so think I'll manage to fill in the time!!

Marylou

Had another post from Roger travelling in March. Would be happy to share experiences.

I just double checked with M.T.T today and after a phone call to head office they confirm that travel to Sittwe , Mrauk U , Bhamo and Myitkyina are definately not allowed at the moment . The New Years Festival will not take place this year .

Ian

Thanks Ian. Had to change my whole itinerary. Arrived in Yangon, one night. Train, and what an experience, to Psay thenMagwe Meiktila Kalaw Nyaungshwe Bagan Mandalay Hsipaw back to Yangon then to Mon State so should fill in the 28 days okay. Hope you're enjoying your travels.

Roger: The White House dorm is $12. Need to prebook now, maybe not in March. Main advantage is huge buffet breakfast otherwise it's just okay. MTT office for excellent info is behind the Siva Pagoda which you will see from the end of the White House Hotel street if you look right.

Let's know your plans if you want more hostels. Forget Psay.

thanks for that. I'll also be in the usual places, Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake. If you can get phone numbers that would be great as I heard most don't have internet.

There's no need to email accommodation. Each place with phone ahead for you. They're most obliging.

At Pyay stayed at Myat Lodging House -OK - can negotiate price! around $8 for cubicle saved for truck drivers to $18 for attic. Met two men who rented motorcycles to explore region then caught 10pm train to Bagan. I went by bus to Megwe then Meitkila to Kelaw. Golden Lily GH at Kalaw 14,000 with no electricity or water at night!! Most people stay one night before trekking etc. Train to Inle Lake 2 hours late cote $3 (need exact money). Most places booked out but have a room at remember inn $15, good value. Lake trips 22,000 for up to 5 people. Off to Bagan by bus tomorrow 11,000 so can let you know accom. I have come roundabout way because of a booking in Bagan for 21 Jan for Balloon.
