I think 6 months in india is too much.. You can spend your other time in thailand or vietnam,,,
Well two months in indonesia, sumatera-java-bali.
Two months in thailand and vietnam.
And two months other in india.
in 6 months covering essence of India is way too less, however you can cover almost all major parts. since you will reach India in August-September you might not be able to cover Northern India including HimachalPradesh, and uttarakhand. you can add Delhi, Rajasthan, Goa, Mumbai, Pune, Kerela to major destinations. If you feel safe and political situations allow try visiting Kashmir it is truly the best possible destination you might have ever visited. Some people also call it "Paradise On Earth."
Advise:
August-September will be wet and humid try carrying rain coats, or umbrella.
