I am due to arrive in KL next April and plan to travel to the east coast of Malaysia to Kuantan and work my way up to Thailand. Has anyone explored the east coast and is it easy to get too?

Where you should to visit in Penang Island and how you go to Thailand
From Penang. hope you heard about this place.
Well... There are many indian, Chinese, Malaysian. Almost people ther can speak eng.
And you can find many cheap and clean guesthouse in love lane rd.
Food is okay and not expensive.
If you arrive in Penang and wanna go to Thailand just take a ferry from Penang to Butterwerth.
It takes time about 15-30 min.once you arrive to butterwerth go to train station
And book the ticket to Bangkok which is final destination.
If im not wrong price is 1200 baht. Or if you dont want to stop in Bangkok but wanna enjoy at the beach you can buy ticket to Suratthani and head to Koh Samui which is beautiful beach.

Train service from KL goes to Butterworth (Penang) and from there on up to Hat Yai Thailand. You can even continue on up to Bangkok if you want. From Hat Yai there is van and bus service to some beach areas. From KL in the other direction, it is easy to get to Singapore.

I have researched into Koh Samui also and it does look beautiful, but would you say it was a must see place? Are the smaller islands better?

Well if you really like the beach you shouldnt miss thailand beach in the south.
Such as Koh Samui, Koh Nang yuan, Koh Pi Pi, Koh Ta Chai.
All as I said is beautiful. But if you need to head to Bkk you can find the beach around Bkk.
Like, Koh Samet, Koh Lam but it it not beautiful and clean as the Beach in south part of thailand.

Usually travelers use the west cost route to go to Thailand, east coast route is somehow out of way, but I personally east cost also has their own charms and less traveled. If you like nice beach but prefer lesser tourist (comparing to Thailand beaches) you can try islands around state of Trengganu offshore (somewhere further north of Kuantan), eg Perhentian Island, Redang Island. April, May toward August is good sunny weather. The northernmost state of east cost Malaysia called Kelantan also can offers some cultural experience. From Kelantan you can cross border to Thailand via Sg Kolok however this maybe a bit risky as this part of southern Thai is categorized as unrest area. Alternatively you can take bus from Kelantan to Penang and spend some time at Unesco world heritage city there before continue your trip by crossing border to Thailand from northside of Malaysia.

Malaysia is truly beautiful country and wonderful people. I have been there couple of time and have really found memories of the place and the people.
I loved Malaysia! I only managed 8 days due to work commitments so didn’t get too far. However I can highly recommend spending some time in and around K.L., the city is quite easy to get around especially if you stay in the Golden Triangle, heaps of shops, temples hidden in little alleyways, amazing street food and the flora and fauna parks are and easy walk that took me through China Town and Little India.
You can also do a day trip from K.L. to a elephant orphanage, sorry I can’t remember the name, but I managed to book it from the hotel. it is definitely worth the visit.
The other place that I really enjoyed was Melecca on the south coast, about 2-3 hours drive by car. It is where the locals like to get away to and is on of the old Spice ports. It is split into Quarters- Malay, Chinese, Portuguese and Dutch. The history is fascinating and the place is extremely friendly.
I wouldn’t stress to much about booking too much in advance though, day trips and transport are easily organised when you are there and much friendlier on the hip pocket
