Format for phones and tablets

Hi,

An app is under development, but (from what's been posted here in the forums a few times) going slowly. I guess that going the app-route means that a responsive design for the site is not high priority at all, unfortunately. :/

There is which is our main provision for mobile devices at the moment. This does support offline writing somewhat by using the browser's local storage to autosave your entries onto your device until you can get a connection. You do however need to have the blog entry window loaded up already otherwise it will not show you that form in the first place to allow the entering.

Alternative solution to that is to email in your blog entries which does immediately mean you have offline access to editing and you can write in the usual editor that you have access to from emails.

Most of our blog designs were created some time ago, so changing them to be mobile friendly is not quite that easy. However, if you want a responsive design you can use the default Travellerspoint template. It has been adjusted to handle mobile devices and should be OK (tested only on iPad and iPhones though)

App ... yeah, I know. Not going to make any promises on timing since this really has rather stalled at the moment. And the absolute plethora of devices to support mean it's an increasingly annoying thing to have to support with our rather small team. I'm just too concerned that whatever we put out is going to suck all our time and energy and not be up to the standard that people expect. But I'm also well aware that this is high on people's wish list.

p.s. Sander. I'd actually prefer to focus on a responsive design rather than development of an app.

If it wasn't for file access, I'd recommend just dropping the app-idea altogether. Firefox OS should soon be really opening up the field there, but I guess the earliest that'll come to the iPhone will be around iOS 9 - and that only if Firefox OS actually manages to be successful.

Could you do a first stage app as an absolutely minimalistic thing, doing only the things which are impossible to do from the web right now? Would probably be a lot of lost work, but at least should be feasible to polish just that minimal set to work really well, and the responsive design would only have to be done once for all the platforms.

As for the blog templates; I think you can get away with wrapping them all (including the user-customized ones) in a min-width media-query, and below that doing a single barebones blog template; make it look good, layer just the colors of the current templates over it, and add maybe a single header/background-image to each to make it feel like the original. I doubt anyone using the current templates would mind. Then for the customizers, just tell them that they also need to add their customizations to the new max-width section if they want those to show up on their mobile devices. (The only thing you'd have to check for is customizers already doing media-queries, but somehow I suspect none of them will be quite that advanced.)
