New site font coming soon - you can test now

I've been playing with the typography on Travellerspoint over the last 2 weeks or so and have settled on a new font to switch to (Open Sans). This will be quite a noticeable change both due to the new font and also a much larger font size.

I have the fallback FreeSans installed on my system. And oh look, this gets the forum layout (see other thread) restored to me!

Oh cool. Any chance you can send me a screengrab of what that one looks like? I got the font stack from elsewhere and just trust those fallback ones are decent.

Sure. *halts open sans installation just in time* And let me just make certain googleapis.com is actually being blocked for stylesheets, too (if not, still have to add it!)

Btw, I think the main column could really benefit from just 50px extra width with this change. 100px is too much, but 50px is imho just spot on.

In the forum it does feel like the main column can do with more width. Problem is, to do that means cutting into the right column or expanding the full site width.

Cutting into the right column is a problem due to standard ad sizes requiring that width. Expanding the full size width is a good option and is what I'd like to do when the whole site is made responsive. I might even just make the site partially responsive to at least accommodate people with higher resolutions.

Yeah, I was thinking that. Should be a relatively minor tweak; 50px for the wrapper, 50px for the column, one new background image, put it all in a min-width: 1024px @media rule, and you're there.

Oh, and the font-size in the textarea at the bottom of each thread could be taken down a notch. At least 15px in my default monospace font is really huge. (Or just go back to specifying a proportional font for the textarea.)

(Email sent, btw, also including Liberation Sans.)

Oh, actually, only now looking at the forum homepage, and wow, that really is a change for the worse. It's a pleasant font for large amounts of text like here in the thread, but not at all for scanning through a dense table. :/ (I upped the column-width in firebug, decreased line-height and padding, etc, but I think this is going to require quite some extensive tweaking beyond that to get it to feel right. Good luck!)

And now.. it's live across the site.

Fixed up the main forum listings a bit too Sander. Title is larger size - the rest is down to the smaller 13px size.

Undoubtedly there will be a bit of flab still in the more obscure corners of the site, but I think on the whole it should all mostly work.

Woah! New font awesomeness! The guide looks amazing :D Although the crumbs are currently sitting over the cover photos.

Do you mean that big gap above the stats? That's normally filled with an ad. Not really sure why that's not showing. Or rather, why it's not collapsing down. Or are you referring to something else?
