Mirrin Rose: You work as a travel writer.
Going to Thailand to do a artical on: Thailand lifestyle and vacation in 2013.
And you need a hands up on the cheepest place to stay.
Enjoy your stay.!
Travel writer. Well ordinary tourists usually start with a budget. Then they know how much per day they can afford for hotel rooms, etc. In Bangkok you can find a cheap hotel with air conditioning and private toilet starting around 600-750 baht a night. But you also have luxury hotels in the $100-$200 plus range too! Not too many tourists stay in Bangkok for a whole month unless they work there or have business interests in that city.
More than 30 days means you probably need a tourist visa so check this out first. Thailand is a big country. Transportation is very good. Popular tourist spots are beach areas, Bangkok and Chiang Mai. But any travel guide will give similar advice.
Bangkok is an easy city to get around in. Good transportation from Suvarnabhumi Airport. Even rail service up to midnight. But meter taxis always available 24 hours a day. However some discount airlines land at Don Muang with fewer transportation options. Meter taxi always available though.
For any hotel advice you should include your price range. A little research will give you advice on where to stay. Nightlife and variety of hotel price ranges, walk to Skytrain, walk to malls, etc. consider the Nana area of Sukhumvit. Want to shop a lot Pratunam area. On a cheap budget and want cheap places with young people around you can investigate the Khao San Road area. (No rail service in KSR area.) Got a lot of money and don't mind paying for taxi cabs maybe the Riverside area. My opinion is that the Siam, Sukhumvit (Nana) area and Asok is good for a little of everything!
Chiang Mai is always popular with women, same for Phuket. Pattaya is not far from Bangkok and is popular for cheap hotels at a beach setting and also cheap nightlife. But beach is not too good in Pattaya! Really young maybe Koh Phangan so you can sit around looking at the moon while getting wasted on alcohol and dope with other young people.
Google check will give you lots of quick information you can consider. Bangkok is cheaper than Singapore!
Have fun.

Well when you said travel writer, the first thing strike to me was.. Wow All Expenses paid by company....
Thailand has a lot of places to see... infact in 1 of the website I have seen some 200 odd things to see and do in BKK itself...leave alone koh samui, phuket, pattaya and other places....
Probably you may have chance to see the moonlight party.. and compare the Nightlife Vs the normal city life...
Commuting is so very easy in bkk and I wish it was at other places too.. You have an option of meter taxi (I personally won;t opt for it, coz I have noticed most of the times taxi drivers themselves aren't aware about the road, lanes etc.), Second option of Tuk tuk (convenient) and Metro(I always use it for my commuting from my hotel to any other places).
If you need a cheap hotel, search in google...I am not very much aware about the cheap hotel, but in 20$ a day would fetch you a nice airconditioned hotel, you may check at Sukhmvit Area....
Hope you will share your travelogue as soon as you reach to Thailand
Wish you all the best and have fun
Have you heard of google! Calling all travel agents!
Sadly, mirrinrose was just a spammer looking to recommend their own site shortly thereafter I was going to delete the thread, but figure some people might be able to use karazyal and vaibhavm23's advice, so leaving it up!
