WWOOFing in India or Nepal?

I really want to live in India for three months, and I think WWOOFing would be a great way to do it. I have heard some bad things about WWOOFing in India, but I wanted to see if anyone has past experience of doing this . I really want to be in the Himalayan foothills, so I'm considering Nepal as well, though I have my heart set on living in India.

What you meant by wwwoofing?

Thanks Kellie..

Read the article. However the term is not very much common in India.. Probably it can be termed as Volunteering if I may say....

I'm out volunteering in India at the moment, and the great thing about here is that there are so many small organisations that are generally involved in the local community, unlike the big companies that do commerical volunteering. I've just had an amazing three weeks on a Cultural Exchange Programme in Udaipur, India with a pretty small company that is really involved in the local community - a combination of cultural classes and volunteering with kids. I've been involved in a couple of other projects too, but I only found them once I got out here. The great thing about India is that everyone has an amazing network of contacts, so once you've found one person, they can direct you towards other projects in other areas.

Phillippa,

I'm just up the road from you in Jaipur... this company that you're with, is there anyway that you could send me some contact details? I'm not so sure how long I will stay in India... but I have a huge soft spot for volunteering with smaller organization

I am planning to travel in India & Nepal for 6 months and i had the same question than you. After doing some research i decided for wwoof Nepal. I've been in contact with the organizers and they seem to be really trustworthy and helpful.
After sending them an e-mail they sent me the complete list of hosts in the country (without any engagement of my part). Wwoofing seems to be really developed in Nepal, maybe because more than 70% of its population works in the agriculture field. Thus, you'll find no less than 175 hosts on wwoof throughout Nepal. The membership is 40USD and most of the hosts will ask you 2-3USD/day to cover your food costs.
