If you're asking only for August, Turkey will not be the best place to go. Not because, it's not safe or anything, but it will be damn hot. Actually, if you're only going to Istanbul, it's OK since it's quite North in regard to Turkey's big cities locations. But, if you still do want go, you should know it's maybe 600% less theft in Turkey in the recent years. But, rather than safety problems, Istanbul is quite a heaven if you hang out with the locals, with a tourist map on your hand, you won't get the perfect satisfaction. So, I suggest you to find some friend of yours from Istanbul, or who knows someone.
I would go to Sweden during any time in Summer, as far as you can go North. You will see the Sun 23 hours a day, and lose perception of night and the day. That's something you want to feel once in your life.
