I am a woman planning on traveling independently through Southeast Asia and India. I have traveled alone before but never in a place where I do not understand the language and is in a completely different alphabet, as well as a third world country where women are severely devalued. I am a little worried about navigating my way through hectic train stations and cities left to my own devices and luggage. For India and Nepal, I am going to be WWOOFing, but I still wantt o travel throughout both countries. I would also like to travel through Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and hopefully Indonesia if I can afford it. I have been looking at traveling with a group, but those run pretty expensive.

Any advice for a woman traveling alone through these countries, affordably and safely? Any program suggestions that are more affordable? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Since you're planning to travel throughout Asia, let me know the duration you want to spend at each country/destination. I felt the same way when I traveled to Thailand... but then people do speak english and you can connect with them easily, and its not that difficult to break the ice.

I am planning on being in India for three months, living on a farm and using spare time to travel down to Kerala, Nepal I am undecided about WWOOFing there or just traveling through...and SE Asia I think I am just going to travel through for a month and a half, but I am tempted to do some volunteer work in Cambodia or Myanmar for a month.
vaibhavm23, outside the tourist zones nothing is easy in most areas of India for a single woman travelling alone. It's a cultural thing... the two main issues are that most Indians can't fathom why a woman is by herself and some segments of the society view a western woman in less than genteel terms. There are MANY exceptions of course - there are loads of fantastic Indians - but a single western woman will run into constant hassles in some areas/situations.
The Indian Subcontinent is generally not an easy place for a single western woman travelling alone.
