Southern Africa with children

hi there,
from Sept beg until Dec end 2013 we will travel across southern africa with children (7 and 9yrs old); we will have 4x4 wheeler with camp gear. It is difficult to make choices amongst the many sights: any first hand experience and must see to share?
2 options are in discussions:

Hi Christophe,

Did you rent the 4x4 or bought it? If you rented the car, check with your supplier, as it might not be allowed to take the car into countries like Zambia or Mozambique. Usually countries allowed to take the car include Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland and in some cases Zimbabwe too.

I think with kids the southern option is a more relaxed one, with better facilities, better roads and less typical tropical diseases. I've read in your other post you are also visiting Australia, NZ, Fiji and Peru/Bolivia. Except the jungle of the latter two countries, you won't need any malaria pills or other prescriptions like yellow fever. So you might choose the same for Southern Africa, but check with the eastern part of South Africa as malaria precautions might be advised.

I've travelled around Southern Africa for almost 3 months in total myself. Namibia and South Africa are just fantastic countries with an enormous diversity regarding both culture and nature.
Some highlights for me were Etosha National Park, the Namib Desert (Sosussvlei), Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (border South Africa with both Namibia and Botswana), the Cape Region, Madikwe and Pilanesberg NP and also Lesotho and the Drakensberg Mountains.

Have fun!
Michael.
