Hello, it's my first time here.
That looks like quite an adventure you have ahead of yourself! My first thought is that it's still too much you have planned here. There's a few two day stays (which really is not even 1 whole day considering you would be arriving on one day and leaving the next). I tend to think of 3 days as a minimum for any reasonably sized city.
I would suggest while you're in Germany to not try and tack on 3 extra countries. There's plenty to see in Germany alone for a month to keep you busy on the weekends.
I can understand your friend wanting to go to Budapest. It's a fabulous city. I'd pick Budapest over Vienna in a heartbeat.
Yes, there is a lot to see in Europe. Just remember, you can always go back some other time Better to enjoy a few places well than tire yourself out trying to see everything.
Enjoy your trip - whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be amazing!!
Peter, Thanks so much for the advice.
my friend and I can still make a few arrangement since we haven't book the train and accommodation yet
I would like to know if taking the train at night is better or taking the train at daytime.
I have no experience in travelling by train . from the pictures, it looks quite comfortable inside the train.
i was thinking that taking the train at night would save more time for visiting places during day time, but will it be unsafe or inconvenient (like we have no idea where to get to) at train station at night?
In Italy, should I just visit venice and florence? Is it worth to spend like two days in Milan ?
(beside shopping branded goods) i really wish to have the chance to come back for Rome again! and maybe save more italy for next time?
thanks again
Taking the train at night is a good option to consider. It depends on the distance. If it's a long distance, I'd rather take a night train. Bear in mind, if you want a bed on the train ( I would suggest yes ) then it will cost a fair bit more than a day train. Of course, you save on accommodation so it works out ok in the end and you're quite right that you get more daytime at your location. All the night trains I've been on have been quite comfortable. Not luxurious, but definitely comfortable enough to get a decent night's sleep.
In Italy, I've only ever been to Rome (and Ancona briefly as well as we caught a ferry from there). So I can't really advise on how much time to spend in the other cities. I do get the impression from others that Venice can be a relatively short visit. But I'll let someone else advise on this.
Driving from Düsseldorf, the Netherlands is less than an hour away... so you could feasibly
hire a car for a weekend and visit Maastricht, or even get all the way over to Amsterdam - or go on the train. Trains from the Düsseldorf HBF are frequent and easy to work out.
Cologne is only half an hour away on the train, and trains go approx every 10 mins. You can also do this in a day trip, may not see all of Cologne, but will see a bit!
Luxembourg is also an easy train trip and could be fitted into a weekend.
My first question would be do you really need to return to London before starting your course? You could travel around as described and just go straight into Düsseldorf at the beginning of August.
This site gives a wealth of info about train travel.
Steve
Thanks so much guys for all the reply. it really helped a lot.
yea, we actually thinking cancelling some destination, so that we won't be too rush,
we might checking on the accommodation and places we really wanna go , and then refine our travel plan.
returning to London before the course is that we thought that its more light and easy for the France trip. we don't have to bring along the whole month stuff . but yeah we would consider going straight into dusseldorf.
thanks for the site. now we know what we should be ready for train travel
seems like we still have a lot of planning to do.
