Euro Trip Itinerary July 2014

Hey guys! So after traveling for 5 months in SE Asia, last year, I've officially caught the travel bug and have decided to travel Europe this year. I have an draft itinerary down as to which places I think I'd like to see - was just looking to see whether people who had been to these places agree with them or whether I should make some changes/additions. Also if you have any specific 'need-to-know' stuff about certain places then that would be helpful too! I've already been to Munich, Frankfurt, Prague, Dublin, Cork, Bruges, Ghent, Paphos & Madrid.
So here's the itinerary:-
Edinburgh
Copenhagen
Stockholm
Helsinki
Tallinn
Riga
Vilnius
Kiev
Chisinau
Brasov
Veliko Tărnovo
Plovdiv
Istanbul
Izmir / Ephesus
Athens
Chania
Skopje
Ohrid
Gjirokaster
Sarande
Kotor Bay
Durmitor N.P.
Dubrovnik
Mostar
Sarajevo
Ljubljana
Bled
Vienna
Budapest
Kosice
High Tatry N.P.
Krakow
Berlin
Venice
Bologna / San Marino
Florence / Siena / Pisa
Genoa / Lucca
Monaco
Avignon
Nimes
Carcassonne
Canillo
Barcelona
Porto
Lisbon

Well I think this is pretty obvious - but id skip Kiev for the next little while for obvious reasons. I honestly don't know how to critique the rest. I'm sure it would be great... if you had a year to travel lol. How long are you going for? Why don't you try and explore some regions in those countries instead of jumping around everywhere?

I'm not sure I agree with the advice to skip Kiev. Kiev is not Crimea, and I expect away from the Maidan it is pretty normal, and even there just be cautious and don't be involved or inflammatory.

Looks a good route generally, just a few disconnects but those could be my own ignorance. As long as you're taking over four months it should work.

You'll obviously route through some places which aren't mentioned - Bucharest and Sofia for example, and both are interesting for at least a day's pause and both have free walking tours run daily by local students, as does nearby Brasov on your list.

Spend some time beforehand getting your head around the Cyrillic alphabet, there are plenty of practice tools on the web. It will help a lot for some of your destinations.

Hi,
Don't know how long you you intend to travel. Take care you want to see too much thinks.
Seems to be a 4-5 months trip.
Take care of the period you are visiting each country.
My advice is you should start in North Europe in July/August. Avoid crowded mediterranean areas in this period. And finish your trip in October/November around the Aegean sea (Greece, Turquey).

Cheers for the replies.
I will be keeping an eye on the Ukrainian situation, of course, and taking the appropriate measurements. Hope it won't be getting any worse around the time I'm there!
I know the trip does seem a bit bouncy with not many stops in each country but I live in the UK so can always go back to a place to explore it more if I like it enough. Guess you could call this an extended taster trip. Looking at the 4 or 5 month period of time, if it takes longer then it takes longer
I've heard mixed views on Bucharest and Sofia so I think I'll make my decision whether to stay or not whilst I'm there, they seem to be the travel hubs anyway. Will take a look into the Cyrillic alphabet too, can never hurt to be more prepared!
Does anyone know much about National Parks in Europe? I've found a couple of good ones but would like to visit more as I'm a nature freak!
Cheers!

For Croatian National and Nature Parks look , there're short descriptions and links for all parks' respective websites.

Looking at your itinerary, it'd be a little out of the way, but I'd definitely reccommend (Plitvicka jezera), any time of the year.

WOW that's a long and interesting tour.
It's accurate too, just few things:
-why not include South italy? Napoli and Apulia are one of the most interesting things to see in western/mediterranean europe
-vilnis to kiev? its pretty long way, maybe a stop in poland or Lviv would be interesting
-kiev to chisinau, skipping Odessa?
-chisinau to brasov, skipping bucharest?
-barcelona to porto, skipping valencia or sevilla?

The Plitvice Lakes look wonderful. I will investigate them I think!
I was thinking about Southern but to be honest I think I'd like to do an extended trip there as there's so much to see - Rome, Pompeii, Sicily, etc. But as for the others - there's super cheap flights with UIA from Vilnius to Kiev so it won't be that bad. I was thinking about Odessa but there doesn't seem to be much there other than beaches (I could easily be wrong here). Will look into Valencia and Sevilla though.
Thanks!
