I'd like to spend a long weekend in Norway visiting the fjords but am not sure of the best way to go about it. I can fly in and out of Bergen, and the flight timings would give me around 3.5 days there. What's the best way to go about seeing some of the region? Should I do a cruise one day and some walks on the other days? Is it possible to explore independently or should I arrange tours/guided walks? I'd like to climb Pulpit Rock if possible. Also is there anything worth seeing in Bergen itself?
Bergen itself has the Bryggen (hanseatic league wooden buildings by the waterfront) and the funicular up Mt Floyen as the main sights.
There's also Grieg's house Troldhaugen if classical music is your thing.
Pulpit Rock is closer to Stavanger and really needs own transport I think. Possible with buses from Stavanger in summer.
I've not investigated tours but I'd think hiring a car to tour would be most effective use of time.
The Hurtigruten ("coastal steamer") is also an alternative, although it basically runs along the coast and only makes a couple of brief detours to major fjords (summer season only).
The nutshell is a quick visit for people with limited time, if you want to spend a week, perhaps better rent a car as Iverh suggest.
