Hi myself and a friend are looking to go to south east asia from mid june to mid august 2014. We defiantly want to do Thailand, Vietnam, cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore, what other countries would you recommend? What is the best route to go and the must see things to do. We will be on a budget how much spending money (excluding flights and insurance) would two people need for nine weeks in these countries?

In 2015, I will be doing that minus Malaysia but also Burma, Laos & Indonesia, so I would have to say you should do those three too. Mine will be river trips. A nice way to travel.

Excluding flights from London, 1500 GBP each will be budget 2000 GBP each will be fair and 3000 GBP each will be awesome. Required money is a very personal thing to be fair, a few years ago i could have survived 9 weeks on about a grand, nowdays i'd want 2.
Routewise depends on where your flying into, fly to Singapore and work your way up i'd suggest, then AirAsia from Siem Reap back to Singapore a cuple of days before you fly home. I'd do something like this (basic) Singapore-Malacca-KL-Penang-Langkawi-Ko Lipe-PhiPhi-Phanghan/Samui-Bangkok-ChiangMai-Pai, then into Laos, onto Cambodia and thats plenty for 9 weeks.

Going to fly into bangkok and make our way to singapore, Will definitely be doing those stops in-between, play it by ear with time and places. Going to do a few river trips, hoping to fit in as much as possible.

If you want to learn about the history, culture or development of Viet Nam, you can go to travel in Ha Noi (Capital of Viet Nam), Hue, Hoi An ancient town, Ho Chi Minh City.
If you want to the beach, you can go: Ha Long Bay (It had been recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage), Da Nang with My Khe beach (U.S. economy Forbes Magazine voted Da Nang beach is one of the six most attractive beaches on the planet in 2005.); Nha Trang, Phu Quoc Island, Con Dao Island.
Mekong delta tour, a tourist destination is very interesting.

This should be enough for 9 weeks as you must understand that it takes a while to travel anywhere in these countries. Some trips can take up to 12 hours. Your route is a little awkward as you're not doing Laos which probably means you should do it like this:
From Cambodia enter Southern Vietnam and travel up to the North. Fly over to Northern Thailand and make your way all the way down through Malaysia to the Singapore at the bottom.
When I traveled last year I spent around £800. ($1200) a month, but this also included doing things like learning how to scuba dive and climb mountains, so you could get away with less maybe.
Be warned though, you will be going at the start of the wet season... It can REALLY rain there. You're much better going between November to April during the more dry season.
