Am i right in saying that once I have been granted my working holiday visa i then have 12 months in which to get to Australia? For example if I apply for my visa in June 2014 and it is granted say June / July 2014, I am able to travel to Australia in March 2015?
Yes, that is correct. (And the twelve months you can then stay in Australia will only start from the day of entry.)
Also I will be travelling to Melbourne when i first arrive, does anyone have any advice on what hostels are the best to stay at for my first week or so?
My favorite YHA over in North Melbourne unfortunately closed down a couple of years ago in favour of the new YHA smack in the city center, and the alternative I last tried in North Melbourne was decent, but would not be something I'd recommend (especially not for someone just arriving). So no personal recommendations from me at this point, alas, but look through the reviews in ; see what catches your eye.
