hey every one just a quick question.. does anybody no if your old passport number and new passport number can be detected by the DIAC?
Given that both passports would have the same name, date and location of birth, and presumably unique social security (or similar) number in them: Yeah, they would.
no thats the point.. you get a new number. and i have been told that if you get a new passport with your current visa on old passport you hve to inform the diac.. so in that case would thy not know?
My passport has two numbers in it. The passport number, which changes which each passport, and my "social security number", which I have to use for all communication with the government, and stays the same always. I'm not certain an equivalent to this last number is in passports for every single country in the world, but even if it isn't in yours, the exact match of name, date of birth and place of birth should be plenty for warning bells to go off if you try to apply for a second visa.
The visa is tied to the passport for easy checking when you enter the country, so you have to let them know if you get a new passport before entering the country, otherwise you won't get in. But you can assume that their visa approval process looks a bit deeper. (I don't know if there's any penalties for willfully supplying wrong information about you having had a WHV before, but I do assume there are, and I really wouldn't like to find out what they might be! I imagine it involving you being banned from the country for a number of years.)
If you have already used a WHV, and then apply for a second on a different passport either the visa will get rejected because of this, or it will be approved. If it does get approved then the fact you've previously had a visa will probably be picked up between the visa being issued and you arriving in the country - if that's the case, at point of arrival you will be stopped and questioned. You will not be able to enter Australia, and will need to catch a flight back at your own cost.
Not really worth the risk, considering the high financial cost to yourself and the fact that Australia has operated a computerised border system for many years. People get caught doing this, including those born in Northern Ireland who have both a UK and Irish passport and try it a second time with their passport from the other country they used first time.

For an example of this, from the Border Security tv program - I suspect 2 different passports from the same country would get flagged up in much the same way.
