So, Im planning a trip around the world starting winter 2013/2014 (hopefully i have everything figured out by then) and ending winter 2014/2015.
Even for a year you have too many places to visit. Maybe just visit some countries in depth rather than spending a fortune on flights?
Where you go depends on what you want to see and what you like. Cities? Outdoors? Beaches? Wildlife? Nightlife? Sights and sites? Culture? Scenery? People?
Since you have so long to plan, try posting questions for each place you think worth visiting. Or just look on the internet yourself, looking at tourism for these places.
I will be using a lot of airmiles. But I want to know the prices of flights (or other means of transportation) so I know where I can budget things. I also have two free flights to anywhere in the world so I will be using those for my two most expensive flights.
I want to see everything. Different things everywhere I go. Thats why I asked if anyone had any suggestions or if they've been any of these places. I want to hear about other peoples travels and what they enjoyed and what they didn't.
I will be traveling by trains and buses through europe as well, so those won't be flights.
I am very flexible with where I go and how I get there, so I wanted to keep an open mind in regards to that.
I wouldn't mind being gone longer then a year. I have no where to be. Im just trying to figure the base of things out right now.
Trying to see 35 countries in such a short amount of time - and fitting in a 5,000+ km road trip clear across Canada too - means that you're not seeing/understanding/appreciating any of your destinations, all you're doing is getting stamps in your Passport.
That's fine - everyone has a different travel style - but don't try and kid yourself that you're getting any appreciation of different cultures... you're going to learn a whole lot about international airports and entry visas and a little bit about small snippets of local culture.
As for working out how to book that pile of international flights... get onto one of the RTW websites that specialize in this sort of stuff or glom onto a really good, patient Travel Agent. Otherwise, prepare to spend a few weeks of solid research on your own.
Have fun. It's not my style but I'm glad it works for you. It would be a boring world if we all liked to travel the same way...
Cheers,
Terry
As I said before I don't mind being gone for more then a year. I could be gone two or three years for all I care, so if people would stop worrying about my timeline that would be greatly appreciated.
Also, as I mentioned before, there are places I pan on spending quite some time, and others I plan on only spending two or three weeks.
I came here looking for advise on where I should visit and costs of things, not to hear about how I'm not going to have time to do everything.
Hi Lissimore12, I can only comment on Egypt as I was there some months ago. Once you're there, you just HAVE TO visit Luxor and some more cities on the Nile (Abu Simbel, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu).. I would definitely recommend a Nile cruise for you. And the other thing I would see is Cairo - pyramids, Egyptian Museum, Citadel, Khan El Khalili Bazaar... be sure you get to know their culture and the simple way of life! Try to ask the travel agency for a personal guide to show you some of the places where not many tourists go, it's worth it. I booked my trips with a local travel agency called Red Sea Reisen (you can google them), they are flexible, reliable and they offer trips for reasonable prices. My stay in Egypt was just breath-taking, but, as I've already said, try to know the local people, walk in small streets, try to soak up the atmosphere of Souks and ordinary places rather than seeing the typical touristic attractions (except of the main sights, of course).
Hope this was helpful. Good luck in traveling, you'll definitely enjoy your trip around the world!
Thank you!
I just planned all of my flights and I'm flying into Cairo. What's the best way to get around Egypt? A nile cruise sounds amazing.
from above your decide to going around the world... i would recommend that u should go the place which have a long distance form your start point... then make your spirit come and bring you to anywhere you would be gone....Anyway, if your pass to thailand let's me know and be part of your trip.. good luck...
more power to you!! having an open mind and no set time line right now is the way to do it...make it happen!!!
as for new zealand and australia - i loved being there and would go back in a heartbeat.
new zealand - some friends and i did a road trip around the south island and stayed in really great and inexpensive hostels every where we went. we were in christchurch (which was my favorite little city at the time, but can only imagine how it is now after the earthquake...), queenstown (beautiful town, very walkable, again great hostels, by far the most gorgeous place to go sky diving or bungee jumping!), milfords sound, mt cook, and franz josef glacier (cool hike...rainforest at the base, glacier when you get to the top)
as for the north island, i didn't spend that much time in auckland but it didn't really wow me. however i did spend a lot of time in smaller towns like whangarie, kawakawa and matapouri - they are lovely, rural towns, but had i not known people living there at the time, it might have been a bit harder to find things to do there lol
as for australia, i lived in sydney for 8 months and enjoyed it. its a big, beautiful, clean city and there's so much to see and do. the blue mountains are definitely worth checking out as well.
google byron bay (closer to the gold coast)...it's a must-visit in my book
anyways, best of luck to you...keep us posted
I recently asked about round the world tickets and found that theres only two major companies that supply them, though there names escape me star something and wunder something? Anyway it seems they work off air miles as opposed to destinations and you can only travel in a clockwise motion and your flight costs wont be covered by the ticket if you doubled back on yourself even if your flight miles allowed it.
If you visit New Zealand i would insist on it being the south island, Queens town is know for having great spontaneous street parties, the locals are of a new breed and are so original and honest, the north island is closer to a rural England almost but without the European glamour. Its a short hop to Fiji from NZ and chances are youll be able to meat many other Fijians before you leave NZ giving you a good grip on the island, Fiji is wonderful but id also look into Vanuatu or Tonga, there both just like fiji being small Polynesia islands but both are a real travelers dream, Vanuatu they are still tribes, im talking bead skirts, spears, the works, and its apparently the happiest place in the world? And a Tongan feast is something to experience.
Just some thoughts, sounds like itll be a life changer so all the best.
