Budapest just before xmas, or for new years?!

Just after a bit of advice as I'm thinking of a short break to somewhere in Europe, possibly Budapest. Is it any good for the xmas markets if I went 21 dec to 24 dec? Or does it have a good night life if I went 30 dec to 2 jan? Or are there any other places/cities that I'm better off going to at this time of year?

I went to Budapest for New year in 2007, and to be honest the new year's eve celebrations were a bit of a disappointment. I expected the fireworks display over the Danube and the Chain Bridge to be spectacular but it was all a bit muted. However the club scene might be quite lively; we're not really into that so didn't investigate it. The Christmas markets were still there though and they were worthwhile. It's a pretty city but I think it might be nicer to go when it's a bit warmer - it was well below freezing (around -8) when we were there.

Thank you bex, I'm not really sure if I'm going there yet or anywhere at all? Just wondering how busy these european cities will be just before xmas, or over new years.
