Palm Springs
LA
Santa Barbara
Carmel
San Fran

Palm Springs--no bad areas, although I'd stay out of the Indio area, which is very far east. Best area is probably from Palm Springs downtown out to Palm Desert.

Los Angeles--stay out of south central area--from just south of USC all the way down to Compton. Also stay out of Long Beach just north of downtown area. Best areas to stay are in Santa Monica on the west, the beaches (Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, and Dana Point) on the south, or near Pasadena in the east. Also, Anaheim and Buena Park are okay to stay in.

Santa Barbara--no bad areas. Best areas to stay are near State Street just north of downtown or just south of town. Or even better is to stay near Solvang or Los Olivos (winery areas about 70 miles north).

Carmel--only bad areas are near Sand City area of Monterey. All of Carmel itself and Carmel-by-the-Sea and most of Monterey downtown is very nice. Same with Pacific Grove.

San Francisco--stay out of the area just south of (or on) Market street and west of 5th street. Best areas to stay are on Nob Hill, Telegraph Hill, or near Fisherman's Wharf. Also, the area within a few blocks of Union Square is good to stay at (as long as you are not south of Market). (Exception is the hotels east of 5th street--such as the Mariott or other beautiful hotels near 3rd and 4th street--these are okay since they mostly cater to those going to the Moscone Center--the largest conference center in the western US).

Enjoy
