melbourne to cairns

can anyone recommend what the best way to travel from melbourne straight to cairns is? is it cheapest to fly or is train or bus best? finding it hard to find buses and trains!
cheers

Distance by road is 1,737 miles.

For a bus you would maybe have to get one to Sydney then another to Brisbane and another to Cairns. Or possibly a straight through from Sydney. but either way it is a long, long time on buses.

Or if you have time you could stop off at a number of places on the way as some do.

Best way is to fly, though not exactly cheap. Such flights are usually cheaper if booked early and booked before arrival in Australia.

It's cheaper to fly (depending on when you buy the tickets). You could probably get a ticket for around ~150 $AUD. However, if you wanted to make stops along the way, the bus is the way to go. Greyhound offers a pass where you can get on and off as much as you'd like, but you can only travel in one direction from Melbourne to Cairns for $450 AUD.
