I am from Australia and have been to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It depends where you're from regarding visas and how much they cost. For me Thailand was free, Laos and Cambodia were $30 US and I got them on arrival. I needed to apply for my visa to Vietnam from Cambodia. I did it in Phnom Penh but it was processed in Sihanoukville. It cost $45 US and took a day to process. I had to relinquish my passport for the night. . .
It depends whether you want to do the 'tourist route' or not. It is easy to follow it once you're on it.
Chiang Mai and Pai in the north of Thailand are great. Can go hiking, see tigers, waterfalls etc. You can cross into Laos from the boarder near Chiang Rai (or somewhere near there).
Once in Laos, the slow boat to Luang Prabang is great, but takes 2 days. You will meet some really cool people on the boat and the night that you stay in Pakbeng. Vang Vien and 4000 islands are two other common travelled places in Laos.
It is easy to cross the boarder into Cambodia from there. Siem Reap (Angkor Wat), Koh Rong (an island in the south) and Phnom Penh (Killing fields etc) are great.
Ho Chi Minh city, Da Lat, Hoi An, Hanoi (Halong bay) are cool places in Vietnam. Again it depends on what you're looking for. Lots of people go on motorbike tours in Vietnam. A friend and I went on a trip by ourselves to Ha Giang and around (northern most province of Vietnam) which was amazing.
These are just some places that are pretty cool. You will meet other people and travel with them once you're there. As for accommodation. . . It couldn't be easier to find. I never booked a hostel or guesthouse and always found nice places. You will get recommended nice places by people you meet.
As for Aus. . . Melbourne is nice, Sydney harbour is great. The blue mountains, but they are on fire so may not be so nice. Byron Bay (Nimbin is interesting for alternate culture). The great barrier reef is the thing you have to do and if you can make it to Cairns and the Daintree National Park you will not be disappointed. Don't go in Aus summer to the north though. . . so hot!! Otherwise 'couchsurfing' and maybe even 'woofing' to ease the cost if accommodation/ living.

We are from the uk . As for visas I think it will be similar to what you faced by the sounds . Thanks for all the tips. That's amazing, and is the exact route we had planned for our trip, finishing with the Islands phi phi etc.
I was also wondering if anyone had any advice on travel insurance and what the best sort of cover to get is to cover both Asia and Australia.
Also if anyone can give a ball part figure on how much it would realistically cost for three months travelling Asia.
I have looked into leaving Asia via kuala lumpar and flying into Melbourne. Is this a sensible plan or are there better options out there to think about ?
