Shared rooms aren't too badly priced though with two of you, you can get a private room for nearly the same price sometimes.

into a search engine and possibly you can line up some work for when you arrive out there.
Be prepared to take any work till you can get a better job lined up.
For cheap and central accommodation, try Nomads, Elephant, or Kings Street Backpackers. There are also plenty of other options on the outer edges of the CBD.
I think previous posts here have suggested a daily budget for individuals in Australia around the $75 mark, just add as comfort and number of travellers requires. Hope that helps work out your budget.
