Car rental is expensive in NZ. Most companies advertise online.
Best to book beforehand as almost all cars can be rented out in busy times.
I've driven around both islands, twice and you get to lots of places you cannot reach by public transport. I never really had any trouble parking either, even in Auckland. Plenty of B&B about on the road for accommodation.
You drop your car off on one island, go across on the ferry as a foot passenger and pick up another car from the same company on the other island, without any extra cost.
