Travellers Cheques in Saigon

I have been told that it is difficult to change American Express traveller cheques in Saigon. The AMEX website, however, gives a number of banks, the Asia Commercial Bank having the most District 1 branches, as being able to effect these changes.
Some forums say that it is a long process to change the cheques. I dont mind showing my passport and filling in various forms but is this all that is involved. I have both US$ 500 and Euro 500 cheques.
Has anybody had any experience of changing TC's in Saigon and what was your experience.
One further question. If I want to change $US 500 TC will I be able to get $US in exchange - otherwise I may need a wheelbarrow for dong!!

Travellers Cheques are so '70's that it's becoming more and more of a hassle to exchange them anywhere. A couple of years ago I ran into a young gal in Hanoi who had wasted an entire day finding a bank to exchange them and to add insult to injury was charged a hefty commission for the service.

In this day and age why don't you simply use ATMs?

Good luck and have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

I already have TC's in quite large denominations -not quite from the 70's but getting that way!

ATM's are fine in most places but in Vietnam there is a very low limit on what you can withdraw at a time - about $100 or so US. Each time you withdraw your own bank hits you with a hefty fee. You are also more open to being mugged as you leave an ATM than leaving the inside of a bank.

Thanks for your info., I appreciate your effort but, to repeat, has anybody had experience of actually changing TC's in saigon?
