Around Europe by car

Hello there folks,

If you buy a car, it may break down (often the reason a car is being sold) so some international breakdown cover would be good. If you do not know a lot about cars, ask what to look for or take someone with you as there are some real wrecks about, made to look nice.

Also get yourself a good Europe road atlas. remainder book shops have them. Remember some roads will be toll roads as in you have to pay for them (peage in France, AP roads in Spain, etc). Leave nothing valuable in the car when not in it.

A ferry across the Channel will be one of your big costs.

That time of year, northern Europe will be varying degrees of cold and wet. Maybe start with the north then head south and you can return in a day or two by driving across Europe.

Sleeping in a car will be horrible. Try it out sometime before you go. Hostelbookers, hostelworld, etc have budget accommodation and you will not be robbed or moved on by the police at night and you can have a shower before you leave in the morning. You can maybe stay a few days somewhere central and do days out from there.

Don't worry about a schedule. That way you spend as little or as much time where you want, when you want.

You could see much of Europe by doing cheap short breaks using Ryanair from Dublin. If you just want time away from a Galway winter, get yourself a cheap flight to Malaga then you can spend time on the Costa del Sol, the Algarve and such, with long stays in cheap winter accommodation. Or even fly to Alicante, spend some time in Benidorm and the surrounding area before heading down south. Lots of coaches about for long distance transport. Spain and Portugal alone have an awful lot to see and do.

From your itinerary that you have mentioned it looks like you will be travelling all around Europe for 1-2 months. Please keep in mind that during summer Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Southern France get quite hot so make sure the AC of your car works and also, if you are planning to spend night in your car then I would suggest you to rent a motohome for a month or two. When you will be driving entire day you need to have a good night sleep. Buy a AA big road atlas for your road trip. Instead to renting the car in UK. YOu can also fly to France by booking any cheapflights like Ryanair or Easyjet and rent a car there, do your road trip and drop off the car in Germany.

good idea. especially for longer trips
we also like to travel in europe with our own car. We have an old VW-bus. A perfect simple transporter. Please buy a good car because it´s easier to sell after your journey.
