I am planning on going to Vietnam and Cambodia next year for 4 weeks and was hoping to travel in April, although I might need to change it to July instead. Has anyone travelled there during either of those months and if so, when is the best time to go?

As you are unable to make your mind, I have idea that in april, the weather is quite cool and you can easily joint in festival and cultural tours in the North of Viet Nam and capture the beauty of nature in late spring while july is time for summer with tour in the beaches.
I think some tip can help you easily make up your mind what time you wanna go.

I’m not sure the best time to travel Cambodia coz I haven’t been there yet but as I’ve read the travel blogs and forums, the ideal time is in December/January, neither rain nor too hot, also the peak season. I think April still sounds better than July, as heavy rain’s daily almost from May until october. the rain cambodia often comes in short, sky will be brightly soon. such a interesting thing I know that Angkor Wat’s so gorgeous after rain. Of course you need anticipate the very high temperature of April, sometimes up to 40oC. July’s cooler a bit but u definitely get difficults with raining cats and dogs.
As for Vietnam (I’m vietnamese),depend on which area you’re in but April is good choice for traveling throughout Vietnam. Dry, mild, cool for the north and not too sunny for the south. July is one of the hottest month of the year, esp the central. it’s also the rain reason so I vote for April.

I think there is a misconception about the effects of weather on travel in SE Asia. If you look at pretty much any guidebook or climate website you will see a rainfall starting low through January to March/April then building quickly as the SW Monsoon takes over through to around October when drier air from the North again becomes dominant. People generally take one look at the ''bump'' of rain in the middle of the year and plan to travel at other times...but they are missing a trick.
I have lived in Cambodia now for seven years and have come to realise that the mornings are bright and sunny pretty much all year around, regardless of the monsoonal season (possible exception Sept and Oct period). So I decided to take a more detailed look at the weather data. I analysed two years of hour by hour data from the Siem Reap weather centre (NW Cambodia) and found the following: The popular rainfall charts show that in the middle of the year you will get some sort of precipitation on 2 days out of 3. Thats alot! BUT - in the mornings (before noon) you get any sort of rain only 1 day in 8.
So... the answer is Come in July and plan your sightseeing for the mornings. Spend your afternoons in markets, cafes and swimming pools.
Prices are a lot lower at hotels, tourist crowds are thinner, rice paddies are emerald green with growing rice (not dry and dusty as they are in April at the end of the dry season), the countryside is alive with activity...
Oh - and April is probably the hottest time to come to Cambodia/Southern Vietnam. combining temperature and humidity into a measurement of how hot it feels (the heat index) it is off the top of the chart used by the US weather service. Just a thought.
