quite the conundrum. Can you deliberately save a certain amount each month and then feel freer to spend the rest? Is there an interest your boyfriend has that he'd be willing to travel (at least part of the way) for? Sports, automobiles, whatever that could be part of the reason for travelling for him?
One thing I would say is get and do this now while you're young (I'm in my 40s with kids) because it becomes much harder later.
