Plus size female trying to find the right travel pack!

Hi guys,

Hi Arty - not sure where you're from (Aus?) so this one might be a bit difficult but New Zealanders swear by Macpac packs. I know these are available in the UK because we had a friend bring one over for us (they're cheaper in the UK than they are in NZ!) . My wife and I both have an Orient Express. These are 65L packs (too heavy if you really fill then up) but they have a detachable daypack, a detachable shoulder strap with money belt and they zip all the way around so they open like a suitcase. But no wheels! You can get them in different sizes and they have differing harnesses depending on your build. I have a male size 3 harness, my wife has a female size 2 harness. You can get these at the moment in NZ for NZD239 which is just about your budget (but about GBP90 in UK).

If you want a wheely one, have a look on the Macpac website http://www.macpac.co.nz/packs/all-packs - the koru has wheels (but no daypack). And it's free shipping to Aus on orders more than NZD100.

I think you might be right - proper harness, wheels, full opening, day-pack - you may not find one that ticks all the boxes. Good luck!

Unfortunately I think you'll have a tough time finding something absolutely top drawer in your price range. That said, have a look and

There are several options there that would work for you.

Lastly, it's all a moot point if you don't pack light. Your coccyx issue is a big one. Consider not getting a detachable backpack and simply get a small/light one that fits inside the main compartment. There are lots of people who backpack indefinitely via hotel/hostel through 3 climates with 40 litres.

Good luck and have fun shopping.

Cheers,
Terry
