Hey guys!
If I had the time/money to travel for a year I certainly wouldn't spent the entire time in Thailand. SE Asia has loads of fabulous/inexpensive options in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc...
Have fun with your research/planning.
Cheers,
Terry

I cannot get Thailand out of my head! Would love to get out of here for a year
From Ireland, staying in Thailand for any time over 30 days requires a tourist visa. The money you have available at the time you leave home is what you live on for the year. You can not legally work in Thailand without a work permit and they are hard to get. Unless you have a special skill that a Thai citizen cannot fill obtaining a work permit is almost impossible to get. Foreigners who illegally work, while dodging arrest, often find the hours long, the work hard, and the pay low. This means affordable accommodations are very basic, with cold water, squat toilets, no A/C, etc.
To enter Thailand on the free 30 day Visa Exemption requires a round trip plane ticket. Tourist visas you buy back home. Visiting other countries means different visa requirements
A year is a long time. Traveling between Thailand and other nearby countries is not difficult.
There are some wealthy expats and retirees on pensions who manage to stay for a years in Thailand without working. There are some foreigners who work for foreign owned companies with business interests in Bangkok. Jobs with foreign companies usually have some good salaries. But you apply for those jobs back home. Then that company handles the work permits, etc.
The late November through late January time frame is more expensive for hotels in Thailand. From some countries plane tickets for flights in December, especially near Christmas and New Years holidays cost more than other months of the year.
If money is a factor stay for less time in Thailand. Maybe 60 day Tourist Visa with a 30 day extension if needed.
Good luck.

Thailand for a year!! don't you think that's so much, try visiting around the place,South East Asia has many more attractions
Hey.
I just got back from SE Asia & I personally think f*k it & go for it! I'm about to do a year working & travelling in Oz. In between my 1st n 2nd year I'm going back to Thailand for as long as my money stretches! I could easssily live in Thailand permanantly it's an amazing country. I stayed on Phi Phi for 4 months!
However there are other nice surrounding countries, I particularly liked Laos (tubing)
I can't blame you for not being able to get Thai out your head.. wait til you get there!

Frequent same day border runs are being more seriously scrutinized. Thailand is cracking down on foreigners staying a long time without proper visa. Anyone planning to stay in Thailand for a long time should stay current with visa requirements.
Have a good day.
