Is september a good season to start a coast-to-coast trip?

Hi guys, as stated i am planning a coast to coast road trip in the US. havn't really got much planning done since i'm still stuck on the date-i would love to go at early sep. Problem is, i am planning on a long trip-4-6 months, and touring the north and the south. Since i am mainly interested in tracking and walking in the wild etc. the weather is a big issue. Is it a good date for such a trip? note i will be touring well into the winter.

If you want to begin in september, I suggest you start south to north. In the US, September is the beginning of our winter, and if you want to go coast to coast, that will put you in our mountain ranges (The Rockies or the Appalachiens (depending on which coast you star on)) right in the middle of our winter. If you start in south america, you will be starting in the summer and by the time you reach the US, it will be summer here.

Hope this helps, Cheers!

Alex

First of all, thanks for the reply.

I think i didn't explained myself well-when i asked about going "south to north" i ment from south US to north US, not south america. My whole trip is planned for the US.

What i ment to ask is: Is there a point at doing a coast to coast trip in the US starting september? will i be able to track in those months (sep to about feb) or is it better to postpone the trip to march? I am trying to understand if the weather in the north for example will be so harsh that i wouldn't be able to enjoy my trip, even if i go north to south (wich will put me in the north at around september-november).

Thanks again and sorry for the missunderstanding, not a native speaker

Well, there are parts of the northern US where the weather is good for skiing, and there are parts where there are no mountains and it is just downright cold. There is no way to predict exactly what the weather will be like in February in certain places--but in general:-- in February, avoid, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Maine, northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and northwestern New York.

States where the weather will be cold, but that still have ski resorts and that aren't that bad from a visitors's point of view would be Washington state, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, western Wyoming, far northern New York state, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

where are you from? expect a winter in the northern US much like the northern Europe winter and at the same time.
